Background Metabolic syndrome is known as a constellation of hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose tolerance, and obesity. We investigated the relationship between depression, stress and metabolic syndrome for Korean:
Methods Metabolic syndrome associated factors, as defined by Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, were evaluated in 575 people aged 35-64 years in a Health Examination Center in Seoul. Health related lifestyle factors(smokmg, alcohol dinniang, physical activity, exercise, eating habits), education level, income, stress, and depression score were assessed by questionnaire.
Results After adjusting for age, body mass index, other health related lifestyle factors, the odds ratio of Zung¢¥s Self-Rating
Depression Scale(SDS) Index >_53 group, compared with SDSI <¢¥ 53 group was 35(95% C: 1.7, 7.4, p=0001), the odds -ratio of high stress group(Brief Encounter Psychosocial Inatrun ent(BE1 SI-K) score_2.8), compared with low stress goup(BEPSI-K score<1.6) was 42(95% CL 1.6, 11.4; p=O.f)04), the odds ratio of regular exercise group compared with not regular exercise group was 15(95% C: 1.1, 5.5; p=0.02).
Conclusions Stress and depression were associated with metabolic syndrome as well¢¥ as low physical¢¥ activity, old age, and obesity. (Korean J .Health Promot Dis Prev¢¥2004;4:1017)
